Polyps and Swelling of the Vocal Cords

At CPH Privathospital we offer specialised treatment of polyps and swelling of the vocal cords. A polyp is a benign mucosal lesion which can affect the voice and in rare cases cause breathing difficulties. The condition typically arises after repeated infections, incorrect voice use or smoking.

Symptoms of Vocal Cord Polyps

  • Progressive hoarseness
  • Breathing difficulties (rare)

Treatment and Operation

The diagnosis is made by laryngoscopy, in which the larynx is examined with a scope. If a polyp or swelling is found, it is removed by an operation. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, and the removed tissue is sent for further examination.

After the Operation

After the operation it is important to avoid using your voice for one week to ensure optimal healing. After that, normal voice use can be gradually resumed. Regular follow-up and possible voice therapy may be necessary to ensure the best outcome.
